A Jordanian university's digital twin campusDelivered · Jordan · 2022

حرم جامعي رقمي في الميتافيرس — دراسة حالة

In 2022 a Jordanian university signed to build a complete digital-twin campus inside an Arabic-language metaverse platform: students and teachers present as avatars in a 3D copy of the campus, with learning supported by VR, AR and AI. Our team built the platform and the campus — at the time, among the first universities in the world to be present in the metaverse.

Challenge

Be present, not just online

After the remote-teaching years, the university did not want a better video-conferencing licence. It wanted a place: its own campus, recognisable to students, where a lecture, a lab and a chance conversation in the corridor could all happen — and where students abroad or at home were present rather than dialled in.

That meant a digital twin campus: the real buildings modelled in 3D, an avatar for every student and teacher, and learning tools — VR for labs, AR for objects, AI for guidance — built into the environment rather than bolted on. It also meant doing this in Arabic, on a platform that a regional university could own its presence in.

What we built

The campus, the people, the learning

Avatars for students and teachers

Every user represented by a customisable avatar. Teachers teach and hold office hours as themselves; students attend, meet and collaborate in shared rooms.

VR, AR and AI-supported learning

Smart learning features inside the campus: immersive VR sessions for practical subjects, AR for examining objects, and AI assistance for guidance and content.

Delivery

How the work was organised

  1. Agreement (2022)

The university signed to build its complete digital-twin campus inside the metaverse platform, with students and teachers present as avatars.

  2. Campus modelling

The real campus surveyed and recreated in 3D by the studio team, to scale and recognisable.

  3. Platform and avatar system

Multiplayer presence, avatar customisation and role-based access built and integrated with the campus environment.

  4. Learning layer

VR, AR and AI-supported learning features configured for the faculties that would use them, with the university's teaching staff.

What we'd add next

The layers we now offer on top

  • Nplay Scholar — a 3D model library with hotspots, animations and quizzes for anatomy, engineering and sciences (in development)
  • Halo Box holograms in labs and libraries, with an AI tutor answering in Arabic and English
  • Virtual graduations and student exhibitions on Nplay Nexus (in development), the format we used for a fully virtual regional summit
  • AI presenters for recorded lectures with Nplay Orator (in development)
  • Open-day tours of the twin for prospective students abroad

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which university and which platform were involved?

We keep both unnamed on this site at the client's discretion. The project was a Jordanian university's complete digital-twin campus inside an Arabic-language metaverse platform, signed in 2022, with our team responsible for building the platform and the campus.

Did students need VR headsets to attend?

Avatar presence in our 3D environments runs without a headset; VR headsets add immersion for the learning sessions where a faculty chooses to use them, alongside AR and AI features.

Is this a metaverse university in Jordan or a digital twin?

Both. The digital twin is the accurate 3D model of the physical campus; the metaverse is the presence and interaction layer — avatars, classes, AI — that runs inside it.

Can Nplay build a digital twin campus for a university in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. The methodology — survey and 3D modelling, avatar and access system, learning layer, launch and knowledge transfer — is the same, and we deliver from Amman and Riyadh.
